“He’s just rounded the Lizard!”

The great thing about being web designer is the fun projects that sometimes come along. Where you get to learn new things and help out in some way with someone’s project. A couple of years ago I started building a site for a friend who was retiring from the Fire Service and planning to solo kayak around the UK for 3 charities. Covid and various other issues delayed the trip, but I’d done a fair bit of prep work, so was delighted to hear he was back on this year.

Colin Wood has just begun his epic paddle, starting at Plymouth 3 days ago (13 May 2022), and heading towards Lands End and then up to John O’Groats.

His background is marine biology and he knows a lot about marine mammals so who know he might get some interesting sightings en route too.

I built a WordPress site for Colin and his family to update on his progress during the trip. But we also wanted to show a live map of his route, so with his Spot tracker feed and a very helpful plug-in developer (thank you Timo*!) I’ve managed to embed this within the site. (We’re even working on adding water depth layers to the map – watch this space!)
